Peer Mentoring

What is peer mentoring?
  • Peer mentoring is an integral part of creating an inclusive college environment for students.
  • Peer mentors are BSC students who develop relationships with fellow students with disabilities.
  • Peer mentors provide academic support, social support, job coaching, independent living skills training, as well as support for self-advocacy and self-determination.
  • The BSC peer mentoring program incorporates the guidelines and best practices established by ThinkCollege and from other secondary and post-secondary peer mentoring programs in North Dakota.
  • Peer mentors are also student employees and earn $16 an hour.
What do peer mentors do?
  • Provide academic, personal and social support to students with disabilities
  • Assist peers to acclimate, navigate and experience college life at Bismarck State College
  • Help peers gain a sense of belonging
  • Facilitate relationships with faculty, staff and students 
  • Development of self-reliance, self-determination and self-advocacy
Meet with your peer for: 
  • Social Events
  • Meals
  • Tutoring sessions
  • Recreational opportunities
  • Weekly planning
  • Service-learning
