Peer Mentoring

Peer mentoring is an integral part of creating an inclusive college environment for students. Bismarck State College began recruiting peer mentors and offering peer mentoring to students for the first time during the Fall 2021 semester.

  • Peer mentors are Bismarck State College students who develop relationships with fellow students with disabilities.
  • Peer mentors provide academic support, social support, job coaching, independent living skills training, as well as support for self-advocacy and self-determination.
  • Bismarck State College is establishing this Peer Mentoring program by incorporating the guidelines and best practices established by ThinkCollege. BSC is also incorporating best practices from other secondary and post-secondary peer mentoring programs in North Dakota.

This post-secondary program at Bismarck State College is supported through grant funding made available through the North Dakota State Council on Developmental Disabilities, contract #660-11939. The scope of this project is to build on the successful Century High School Peer-to-Peer program, incorporating best practice components of the Think College Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disability (TPSID) and the Minot State University Advancing Students Towards Education Program (ASTEP), as well as other projects.
